Not Exactly A Drawing

“Oh fu-” That’s all that gets out of Eleanor’s lips, an expletive that dies on the vowel. Stumbling backwards; away from glowing tangerine eyes, plasma guns too big for a human to wield, and arms that could crush a class four star cruiser like a tin can; her mouth goes dry. The tri moons of Trik’zar are at their height, the glow bright and silver like light on water. It ripples to the ground, making it seem more like an overcast day than the middle of the night. One of the four armed native guardsmen has the Captain by his feet and hands, the brute gnashing arrowhead shaped teeth. Thoughts of the job gone horribly awry and the threat of being turned into a soup by Lupo flee the mind as he locks eyes with her. A brief connection, before clawed hands the size of tires pull his legs one way and this arms another. “Jesus.” It’s all a second, and suddenly it rains red. Eleanor doesn’t believe, but she can’t call out his name. The look he gave, he knew it.

“ABE!”

Grundy’s deep strangled cry does her good. Suddenly the heat of the Trikian tropic belt is back licking her skin, and her heart is rattling madly in its cage. Turning she lunges at their gunman, grasping him by his thick wrists and tearing him away. He’s fighting though, his legs drag like lead weights, but she can’t blame him. To see a lover go, like that of all the ways. “We gotta move!”

“WE CAN’T LEAVE-”

“SHUT UP AND MOVE GRUNDY!” The blood from his date with the warehouse’s floor is damn near covering half his face, like a dark sludge curing and caking on his skin. However she doesn’t even think about checking him for a concussion or having to stitch him back together. Boots to the ground, one in front of the other, towards the rock formation. Their pursuers are too big to make it up to the top, humans however are just the right size. Shoving him forward and hoping he keeps with the momentum, she taps the communication link wrapped tightly around her ear. “Jojo, August, get us out NOW!” The cannons scream behind them. Suddenly the air’s electric, it sizzles and makes it feel like their hides are going to cook in their clothing. The neon bolt whizzes past them, turning a boulder into a pile of slag.

We’re locked on and moving double time, Elle.” The young voice crackles in her ear.

Eleanor gives him another shove, seeing now that his running is back to automatic. It’s something she’s thankful for, because he’s far too heavy for her to go on much longer. Reaching down, her hand blindly gropes for her gun, yet it’s not strapped in it’s holster. In all likely hood the blaster was dropped somewhere between where they gave up the cargo and where their leader was ripped in half. “Shit. Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit.”

Grundy turns to look at her. His eyes are like saucers, and she’s not sure if the big hulk of a man is crying or not. “What?!”

“I don’t have my gun!”

His face is either slightly paralyzed from the beating he took, or he can’t process the fact that she’s unarmed.

“Where’s your sp-” There’s another wail of energy. Whatever it strikes and melts the repercussion wave hits them and throws them forward. Suddenly all that can be seen is sky, followed by rocks. Appendages feel jointless, limp and without control as they clash with stone. Clothing rips on jagged edges as bodies are crunched and sliced. The pain barely registers though as Eleanor struggles to to her feet. She paws at her ear. “Jo-” It’s a battle to breathe, much less form words. “Jo, we need you guys-”

Hang in there a little longer” The disembodied link voice reassures. “August has got us running as hot as atmosphere allows-

“Get here now.” It comes out like a desperate plea, and it is. Everything blurry slowly comes into focus as Eleanor lurches forward to what appears to be the general shape of the top of the formation.

I’m flying on neural integration Elle. But I’m only able to get a lock on you and Grundy, I can’t find the Captain-

“GET DOWN!”

Grundy’s enormous hand connects with her back and sends her down as another shot rips the air. Eating a mouthful of spice grass, she feels his arm pin her to the ground. The flash and the pulse of the cannon fire is quick and scorching as the rock around them liquifies into smoking red mounds. Coughing, her head struggles to look back to see the guards clambering up the boulders as their cannons recharge.

“Come on!” She can hear the growl in his voice. Apparently he’s decided to mourn later, and focus on surviving.

Grundy’s fingers grab at her armor vest and haul her up to her feet, making her gasp. She’s still coughing as it’s his turn to drag her along. Being steered around the melted rocks, he grabs her two handed by the back of the vest and nearly hurls her up onto a large boulder. She scrambles up, the surface cutting her palms and fingers as her boots manage to catch hold. Once at the top Eleanor reaches down and grabs his wrist. Pulling him up, a whine fills her ears and grows.

You there?!” Jojo’s voice buzzes in. “Where’s the Captain?!

She struggles with Grundy’s weight, the whine of the ship beginning to drown out the vicious threats of the guards as they know they’re closing in.

“They’re here?!” Grundy squints up at the sky.

This is going to be slightly unpleasant, but we don't have time to land and grab.

“Yeah! It is!” She can’t look up, but suddenly they’re flooded in blue light.

Got you guys in three, two-

It’s a pop, like metal touching a socket. A pop and suddenly they’re weightless, flying through the air in a beam of blue light, up to the doors. The doors groan shut, and the gravity is abruptly back on. Landing on metal grate floors, they both wince and catch their breaths. They’re tossed into a wall as the ship barrels forward and up to get away from cannon range.

Abe.” It’s the last thing she can hear Grundy say before everything goes black. “Abe.”

Kinda slowly working on a comic. That's kinda the first couple of pages, just more with words than lines.

EDIT: Annnd apologies for that funky formatting. Changed it some. Hope it helps.

  1. Oh I like this! What an actiony beginning and with feeling as well. I feel so bad for Grundy, to see his love go in such a terrible way and then to have to leave him behind. I'm looking forward to seeing your comic, it seems it will be a good one going by this tale. Thanks so much for sharing this with us, and I hope to see more from it, and you, in the future!

  2. Aha! Now I know how that little gray man alien transport feels.

I liked the pace, action but with time for the characters to show something about themselves (like the look between Elanor and Abe).

Hope to see you back next week.
